Hand-Arm Vibration Testing - Vibration Severity Index of Hammer Impact

Hand-arm vibration is of increasing concern to all workers. This area has had a lot of research for power tools with well established standards in place.  Impact tools have had less research, but this area is also of concern to users of hammers and their employers. Determining the damage from vibration from impact tools is an important challenge.

Spectrum Technologies has developed a technique for measuring the severity of hammer impact vibration.  The technique measures the vibration on the hammer handle for a given impact force.  This measurement is then transformed into a vibration severity index (VSI) using principles consistent with ISO5349.  In addition, the technique measures the first bending frequency of the hammer handle.

The VSI enables the comparison of the vibration severity of different hammers. During hammer design the VSI of different design iterations is measured to reduce the vibration felt by the user.
